Wonders from the Word – A Child Shall Lead Them (Matthew 18:3)

September 17th, 2007 by phall

One Monday night, a prayer ascended to heaven.  My oldest girl, Rachel, then seven years old, was looking forward to turning eight in a few days.            Trying hard not to be a selfish child, she did not ask God for toys, dolls, and games.  No, what she asked for  was far more amazing.  Her heavenward message was tempered  with faith and patience – “Dear God, please make tomorrow Wednesday, that’s a favor.”  She smiled. I smiled. I believe all of heaven smiled.            The next morning, Tuesday, she dressed for school, walked into the kitchen and asked me, “Is today Wednesday?” Not only did she remember what she prayed for, but looked for God’s answer!            “No honey, God did not make today Wednesday.  I guess He wanted to teach you patience. He could have, if He wanted to.  But He didn’t.”            Ashley, my youngest, also builds my faith.  Her prayers are a heart-written list of love – she even includes the dog! At least she mentions me before the mutt!…usually.            I now have two other children, adopted boys.  Children coming from a foster-care background can deeply appreciate Jesus thinking someone is important enough to redeem.  Now they know they are worth caring about and saving.  And you can hear it in their prayers.            Prayers, not pulpits; children, not preachers, give us some of the grandest, most humbling, faith-building sermons.  May we parents all have our children’s faith – and thank God for their  example.  I know your children teach you also.            Jesus loved and loves children.  Once, when surrounded by children, He said “Truly I say to you, unless you are converted (Literally., are turned) and become like children, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven….the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Mt.18:3;19:14)Hey kids, thanks for showing us the Way.
