Wonders from the Word – A Two-Way Conversation

May 20th, 2008 by phall

A two-way conversation with God. Sound interesting? Spiritually, we all profit from talking to God, but the silence from heaven is sometimes deafening. Do you sometimes wish for a direct verbal answer? Searching the scriptures is tough work, trying to “read God’s revealed mind,” (1 Cor.2) and then applying the principle to our times. Wouldn’t it be easier just to receive an audible response?

In talking with someone wishing for such a dialogue, they wanted to know if this yearning of theirs was asking too much. At first, a two-way conversation with God sounds intriguing. Then…then I thought of the people in the Bible who had such conversations.

Abraham spoke with God, who asked him to sacrifice his son, saved only at the last minute by a voice from heaven (Gen.22).

Moses talked with God from a bush (Ex.3ff) and had to confront the ruler of one of the most powerful men in the known world – and denounce Him.

Jeremiah became a despised prophet after speaking with God (Jer.1), and was not even allowed to marry nor have children (Jer.16:2).

Others heard the voice of God directly to them, such as Hosea, who had to go take to yourself a wife of harlotry (Hos.1:2).

Paul saw the light, heard the voice (Acts 9), and later begged for the thorn to be removed (2 Cor.12) and the voice said no.

Those blessed with speaking directly with God carried responsibilities equal to that blessing.

A two-way conversation with God? We all want the blessing, but could we handle the responsibility?  (Perry D. Hall)
