Wonders from the Word – Remember (Luke 24:5-8)

Can you imagine a more frightening yet thrilling experience than the following – With brokenness within your heart, with hopes for the future dashed, you walk to a tomb only to find it surprisingly empty while angels in gleaming apparel ask, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead?  He is not here, but He has risen. Remember…” (Luke 24:5-6) The core of Christianity is the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.  At that core is a simple request – remember.  Transcending even death is the power of remembering, healing our brokenness, renewing our hopes, knowing that Jesus is here today because He promised. The angel said, “Remember how He spoke to you…saying the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and the third day rise again?  And they remembered His words…” (Luke 24:7-8). Remembering the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus is accomplished in each baptism as we are immersed and risen anew, reenacting the gospel story.  We are the sinful men becoming sin free because we remember. Remembering is reenacted every resurrection day as the gospel story is again proclaimed.  Because the Incarnated died to be incarnated again, we remember.  We share the bread of life.  We share the blood of forgiveness.  We proclaim life over death because we remember. Through baptism and communion, our hearts heal, our hopes renew, just as our Savior has promised…because we remember. Perry D.
